I’m Still Willing to Be a Beginner

Not long ago, I found myself wondering about something.

Why am I still so willing to be a beginner?

The answer surprised me. The truth is, I’ve never really stopped being one.

As a little girl, I loved school. Working hard never bothered me because I was curious. Good grades weren’t something I chased. They simply came from wanting to learn. In high school, I worked in a bookstore along with several other jobs. Even then, I loved being surrounded by books and everything they had to teach me.

Then my stroke happened. Overnight, I found myself back at the beginning. Simple words no longer came easily. Writing became a struggle, and there were days I wondered if I would ever move much farther than where I was. More than once, I was told to accept where I was because this was probably as good as it was going to.

I chose not to believe that. Life simply kept giving me different things to learn.

That thought still makes me smile. When I finally reached a place where I could begin asking myself what I wanted again, I discovered something unexpected. The little girl who loved learning had never really disappeared. She had simply been waiting.

As many of you know, writing my book became one of those dreams. Then another question surfaced.

How do I help my story reach the people who need it?

That question placed me right back at another beginning.

WordPress was new to me. Facebook was new to me. Building a website was new to me. Sharing my writing online was new to me. I didn’t have the answers. I simply started. Then I asked another question. And another. Little by little, the things that once felt impossible began to make sense.

That’s when I realized something. Being a beginner doesn’t frighten me. Life has already taught me how to begin again. Maybe that’s why I’m still willing to be a beginner. Not because it’s easy. Because every time I’ve been willing to start, I’ve walked away knowing more than I knew before.

Today, that willingness is helping me share my story with people I may never meet.

If becoming a beginner one more time helps one more person find hope…

Then every new beginning is worth it.
