The Life I Didn’t Expect to Want

The other day, I was sitting in a coffeehouse working on my laptop.

My latte sat beside me while i settle into my writing. As the jazz played softly in my ears as the smell of fresh coffee beans filled the room, and before long I had settled completely into the moment..

Every now and then, I would stop and look around.

An artist sat nearby working on a sketchpad. Across the room, someone was absorbed in a book. A few people tapped away on their laptops while others simply sat and talked over coffee.

So many different lives.

So many different stories.

I found myself wondering what had brought each of us there that day. Everyone had their own reason for being there, and I realized I didn’t need to know what it was.

What struck me was how comfortable everyone seemed in their own little corner of the world. Nobody looked rushed. Nobody looked out of place.

For a moment, I realized I didn’t either.

That thought made me smile.

A few years ago, I never would have pictured myself spending an afternoon this way.

It reminded me a little of the season when I first realized I might want more out of life than I had admitted to myself.

If someone had told me that one day I would be sitting in a coffeehouse, writing for hours, listening to jazz, completely content just being there, I probably would not have believed them.

Yet there I was, with jazz playing softly in my ears, my latte slowly growing cold, and the words continuing to find their way onto the screen.

For a little while, I was exactly where I wanted to be.

As I sat there, another thought worked its way into my mind.

I looked around the room one more time. The artist was still drawing. The woman with the book had not moved. A few people were still working on their laptops. Everyone seemed perfectly content to be exactly where they were.

So was I.

Completely lost in my own little corner of the world.

It felt like home.

Years ago, I used to dream about little moments like this.

Sitting in a coffeehouse.

A latte beside me.

Music playing softly in the background.

Writing because I wanted to, not because I had to.

Yet there I was.

Then I took another sip of my latte, placed my hands back on the keyboard, and smiled.

Looking back, I think all of this began when I started saying yes more often.

My curiosity came back before my confidence did.

I found find myself wondering why that feeling seemed so familiar.

Because somewhere along the way, without even realizing it, I had found a life I never expected to want.
