Where Can One Idea Lead?

—

It started out as something simple. I wanted other people to know that when life throws something complicated at you, you do not have to give up. When someone tells you, “This is as far as you are going to get,” you do not always have to accept that answer. Sometimes you have to build the courage to keep moving forward.

From there, the idea became something bigger. The next thought was how to tell people what I had learned. Then came the harder question.

How?

Did that mean I should just go out and tell them? No. Talking in public was not on the list of things I thought I could do. Words scared me back then. They had a way of running away from me and hiding. It was hard to get them to come back.

But what about writing a book? I used to love writing when I was younger, but now? For someone who lost her words after a stroke, that was a pretty big obstacle. It was also a challenge I put on myself. I was not going to continue letting the loss of my words stop me or take away the things I loved.

So I went round and round with the writing.

Write. Rewrite. Then rewrite again.

Over and over, trying to get those words to make sense to someone besides me. Somewhere in the middle of that self-imposed challenge came another question.

How do I get it to people?

Friends could help get the word out, I was told. Amazon could sell the book for me. Good idea, if I could actually get the book there. But if I really wanted to reach people who did not already know me, maybe I needed a blog.

There was only one problem. A blog was something I knew almost nothing about.

So I started one.

Pushing myself forward was something I had been doing all my life. The only way I was really going to understand what a blog was, I figured, was to create one myself.

I did not know enough about what other people wrote or why they wrote it the way they did. It is hard to follow the rules when you do not even know what the rules are. Somewhere along the way, it became its own thing.

Apparently, this idea of mine has a mind of its own. Just when I think I have enough on my plate, it wants to go another step.

Lately, virtual workshops have been on my mind. Maybe there is another way to sit with people, talk about the obstacles that get in our way, and help someone see that there may still be another route forward.

Then I hear something in the back of my mind. If you really want to do this, if you really have this need to let other people know, maybe it is time to learn to speak up.

That one makes me smile. A woman who once thought public speaking belonged on the list of things she could not do is now wondering how she might use her voice to help someone else.

When did this idea first start feeling like more than an idea? The answer feels pretty simple.

It happened when I refused to give up.

So how do I turn an idea into something real?

I let it breathe. Let it grow. Give it a chance to become something before I decide exactly what it has to be.

And somewhere along the way, it starts taking on a life of its own.
