We All Try to Hold On a Little Longer

Why is it that even when we know life is changing, part of us still wants to hold on a little longer?

I think it’s something all of us have done in some fashion over the years.

Do you linger at the door after saying goodbye? Or maybe you stay on the phone for another ten minutes even though you said goodnight twenty minutes ago?

What about those little things we tuck away in a drawer because we just can’t bring ourselves to throw them away? Sometimes we even hold on to things that no longer make us happy.

I know I’m not the only one who does this.

I think letting go makes something feel final, and sometimes we just aren’t ready for that.

Then there is that favorite T-shirt from forty years ago. You know the one. It came from a place you loved working, and somehow you still wear it. It doesn’t matter that the fabric is so thin you can practically see through it.

You’re not getting rid of that shirt.

Or how about that family recipe that has to be made every holiday? Everyone knows it probably isn’t the healthiest thing sitting on the table, but that doesn’t matter. Someone we loved used to make it, so now we make it.

Somehow, it wouldn’t feel like the holiday without it.

Even our dearest friendships change over the years. We grow, and our lives sometimes go in different directions. Yet every once in a while, we remember the laughter and wish we could sit together one more time.

Do you remember driving past a place and suddenly thinking, “I remember when I was a teenager. I hung out there all the time”.

For just a moment, the memories come rushing back.

Then there are those songs we refuse to skip. We have known each and every word for decades, and somehow we still sing along.

These are little pieces of life we aren’t quite ready to let go of.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

I believe we all need to hold on a little longer sometimes simply because it mattered.

Moving forward doesn’t mean throwing away all those memories and starting new. Memories deserve another smile, and some dreams may even deserve another chance.

This is the part I am beginning to understand. We don’t need to decide right away what stays and what goes.

Have you ever simply held something in your hand for a while and asked yourself, “Why is this still here?”

Does it still mean something to me, or am I holding on because I’m afraid of what it means to let go?

The answers won’t be the same for everyone.

We all try to hold on a little longer because letting go isn’t always as easy as opening our hands.

Sometimes our hearts need a little longer to catch up.

And I think that’s okay.
