Why I Still Love Learning

I’ve been asking myself a simple question.

What do I want my next chapter to look like?

One answer came almost immediately.

I never want to stop learning.

I’ve loved learning for as long as I can remember.

In school, I was usually finished with my work before everyone else. I’d help my teachers whenever I could, and I also worked in the school bookstore. Whenever the bookstore was quiet, I’d wander through the shelves. I was always searching for something new to learn.

I had no idea those simple moments were shaping so much of who I would become.

Life eventually handed me a challenge I never expected.

My stroke changed what learning looked like, but it never changed my desire to learn.

Finding the right words felt impossible. Every word I found again wasn’t just another word. It became part of a new vocabulary I was building. Each new word became another stepping stone carrying me forward.

The more I think about it, the more I believe my love of learning prepared me for the greatest challenge of my life. Learning wasn’t just helping me recover. It reminded me that progress was still possible. Rediscovering words became one of my earliest victories, something I shared in Rediscovering Writing After Stroke: The Word That Changed Everything.

That desire has never left me.

I’m still adding words to my vocabulary because I enjoy the challenge. Aphasia may still interrupt me now and then, but it hasn’t taken away my love of words. If anything, it has made every new word feel a little more special. I still smile when I discover a word I’ve never used before and begin wondering where I might use it naturally.

Sometimes a blog post begins with one idea, then quietly leads me somewhere I never expected. Before I know it, I’m following another question, and that question often opens a door I didn’t even know was there. That growing sense of wonder surprised me more than I expected, something I reflected on in The Wonder Before Me.

I love conversations that make me think. I almost always walk away having learned something new. Those are the conversations that stay with me long after they’re over.

One question has a way of leading to another.

Some afternoons I’m reading medical research because I want to better understand my own health. Other times I’m reading about history, fascinated by another place and another time. Germany still calls to me. I’d love to walk through those medieval streets again, not to relive the past, but to experience them with fresh eyes.

Even when reading became difficult, my curiosity didn’t disappear. I simply turned to audiobooks until printed words slowly became part of my life again.

When I need a break from researching, you’ll probably find me reading a suspense novel, trying to solve the mystery before I reach the last chapter.

The older I get, the more I realize learning isn’t something I schedule.

It’s simply part of who I am.

As I’ve continued asking myself Who Am I Becoming, one answer keeps rising to the surface.

I never want to stop learning.

There will always be another question waiting for me.

And I have a feeling that’s exactly the way I want to live this next chapter.
