The world was full of words, but I was lost in silence. Stroke took my voice and language—yet I refused to stay lost. I searched for them everywhere—in conversations, on signs, in books I once loved. Each word I found was a step toward reclaiming not just my language, but my identity.
Aphasia affects more than speech, reading, and writing—it impacts memory, comprehension, and how we express ourselves. It distorts how we think, how we remember, and how we connect. But I refused to stay lost.
I searched in the world around me—conversations, signs, screens—rebuilding language piece by piece. Each word I found was a step forward. Each sentence I understood was a small victory.
Now, I read. I write. I understand.
The road was long, and every hard-won word became a part of my recovery. But I’m still here, still growing, still learning. And now, I continue writing the next chapter—on my terms.
Light Still Shines
The road was rough, the path unsure,
I faced the fight, but I endured.
My words got lost, my steps were slow,
Yet deep inside, I wouldn’t go.
The world moved on—I stood behind,
Still searching for the me I’d find.
Each day, each breath, a battle new,
But giving up? That wouldn’t do.
I’ve stumbled, sure—but here I stand,
Not where I was—but here I stand.
I may be changed, but I’m still me,
Just learning who that’s meant to be.
The past still lingers, fades and stays,
Yet somehow, light finds through the haze.
Not what I was, but something new,
Still standing strong, with clearer view.
Aphasia stole the words I knew,
Yet not my mind—it still stayed true.
Not just my speech, but reading too,
And writing—things I had to do.
So I searched for words in all I saw,
In signs, in sounds, in lines once raw.
I pieced them back, rebuilt, regained,
The strength to write, to speak my name.
So if you ask what lies ahead,
I’ll take each step with hope instead.
Through every turn, through loss and strife,
I read. I write. I own my life.
