You don’t always notice it right away…
that quiet feeling of belonging.
Sometimes, it shows up slowly
in movement, in stillness,
in the simple act of showing up again.
This was one of those moments.
This evening, I went for a walk.
Cars moved along the main street,
but I could hear the birds above it all.
The breeze was soft against my face.
I think I was looking for something
a connection…
a sense of belonging.
Some days, it’s hard to find.
Still, I kept walking.
Listening.
Feeling each step on the sidewalk.
Under those old trees,
just observing…
just being.
It’s been a long time
since I returned to a daily walking routine.
Not since my surgery.
That hasn’t been easy.
But here I am.
I’m not going to let that stop me.
I set a point—
a distance to reach.
One mile.
A simple goal…
but a meaningful one.
It’s been over eight months.
When I reached the halfway mark,
standing at the corner,
I paused.
And for a moment,
I just looked around.
The southern homes that surrounded me
quiet, steady, beautiful in their own way.
And something in me recognized it.
I had dreamed of this…
even as a child.
Back then,
I think I was searching
for something I didn’t have
something that felt like it was missing.
I didn’t know how to name it then…
only that I longed for it.
And maybe… in some quiet way,
part of me still does.
And now…
Here I was.
Walking down a sidewalk,
with nature beside me,
taking in the world around me.
Not searching the same way anymore…
but still finding something.
Maybe not perfect.
But real.
And maybe…
that’s enough.
Healing doesn’t always come in big moments.
Sometimes, it arrives quietly…
one step at a time.
And sometimes,
just being present
right where you are
is more than enough.
Because every story deserves a second chapter.
I wrote about another quiet moment
of reconnecting with myself
in The Day I Stopped Waiting.
