When I Walk

Sometimes I walk in silence
not because I have nothing to say,
but because I need to listen.

The world has its own language.

Wind moving softly through the trees.

Footsteps finding their rhythm again.

The steady reminder
that I am still here.

After my stroke,
I learned peace doesn’t always arrive through words.

Sometimes it comes through noticing

light moving through branches…

cool air against my skin…

the sound of my breathing
finally slowing down again.

Walking became part of how I found myself again,
something I reflected on more deeply
in A Sense of Belonging After Stroke: Walking My Way Back.

When I walk,
I listen…

to the hush between footsteps,

while leaves softly applaud
as the wind moves through them.

There’s no need
to fill every moment with conversation.

The world already speaks

in color,

through rhythm and movement,

in the quiet rise and fall
of breath.

Silence no longer feels empty to me.

It feels like belonging.

For a long time,
silence felt very different.

Not peaceful.

Not calming.

It felt lonely.

Like standing outside the world
watching everyone else move through it
while I struggled to keep up.

But somewhere along the way…

silence changed.

Now it gives me room to breathe.

Room to think.

Room to simply exist
without feeling pressured
to explain myself.

Somewhere my thoughts begin to untangle.

Somewhere my spirit
finally exhales.

Healing has also meant learning
how to slow down enough
to truly notice life again,
something I reflected on more deeply
in The Little Things I Notice Now.

For years,
I rebuilt calm
from the chaos that once lived inside me.

Now…

peace feels like prayer in motion.

Balance on uneven ground.

A quiet return to myself.

I walk to remember
that simply being present
is enough.

That I don’t always need to explain
the quiet things that help me heal.

When I walk,
I feel whole…

even when others
don’t fully understand
why silence matters to me.

So I keep walking.

Not to escape—

but to return.

To the woman I am
when the noise fades…

and the world
finally grows quiet again.

Because every story deserves a second chapter.

I love being in the middle of Mother Nature. Give me a cup of coffee, a trail with no destination and a beautiful sky, and I have everything I need.
