When I Don’t Follow Through

There are days when I don’t follow through.

Not in a big way,
just in the small things
I’ve set for myself.

My physical therapy is one of them.

Most days, I show up and do the work,
and I can feel that sense of achievement building.

It reminds me
that I’m moving forward.

Every now and then,
I allow myself a day off.

I’ve learned to do that…
to remind myself
it’s okay not to push so hard all the time.

Still,
that doesn’t mean it comes easy.

There’s a part of me
that feels like I’ve let myself down.

Walking brings that feeling too.

If I don’t go,
I notice it.

It feels like one less step
toward where I want to be,
and I can feel that distance
more than I used to.

When I don’t follow through,
it weighs on me—
like something sitting on my shoulders.

I’ve come to recognize that feeling.

Because I also know
what happens when I move.

If I get up
and take even a small step forward,
I almost always feel better.

Not perfect…
just better.

Like I’ve reminded myself
that I’m capable…
that I can still reach the goals
I set for myself.

The same thing happens
with my journals.

They aren’t all the same.

Each one holds something different for me.

One is filled with accomplishments
I’ve done that once felt impossible.

It’s a place I return to
when I need to remind myself
how far I’ve come.

Another holds the time around my surgery,
the preparation,
the days right after,
and the months that followed.

It became a way for me
to see my progress
when I couldn’t always feel it.

Some days, journaling becomes a place
to sort through what I’m feeling.

Other days,
it turns into something creative
an art journal,
a story,
a different way of expressing
what I can’t always put into words.

I didn’t plan for it to become this.

Somewhere along the way,
it quietly became part of
how I process my days now,
something I reflected on more deeply
in What My Days Look Like Now.

So when I don’t write in them,
it feels different.

Not just like I skipped something,
but like I stepped away
from a part of myself.

For most of my life,
the answer to all of this was simple.

Push through.

Get to the other side.

Keep going no matter what.

That’s how I’ve always handled things.

But I’m starting to see
that pushing through
doesn’t always mean success.

Sometimes,
it just means
I didn’t stop long enough to listen.

There are still days
when beginning again
feels harder than I want it to,
something I shared honestly in
When Starting Again Feels Like a Battle.

Giving myself grace…
that’s the part
I’m still learning.

It doesn’t come naturally to me.

I’m beginning to understand
that not following through
on a single day
doesn’t erase everything
I’ve already done.

It doesn’t take away my progress.

It doesn’t undo the effort.

Maybe it’s just part of the process.

A pause.

A reminder
that moving forward
doesn’t always mean pushing harder.

Sometimes,
it means allowing myself
to step back…
and still know
I’m going to be okay.
