What I Carry With Me After Stroke – Awareness, Healing, and Quiet Strength

There are things I carry with me now…

Not things you can physically see.

More like quiet parts of myself
that guide me differently than before.

My thinking has changed.

There’s more pause now…

more awareness.

A quieter need
to understand what’s around me
instead of simply moving through it.

Sometimes I sit with things longer.

Turning them over.

Trying to understand
what fits…
and what no longer does.

Not from fear…

but from wanting
to feel grounded
in where I stand.

Small things stand out to me now.

Changes in a room.

The emotions people carry
even when nothing is being said.

There’s a sensitivity now
to my surroundings
and to others.

At times,
that awareness can feel heavy.

But more often…

it feels like a deeper connection
to what’s real.

Earlier in my healing,
walking away came from overwhelm.

My brain struggled to keep up
with everything happening around me,
something I shared more deeply
in When I Choose to Walk Away.

There were also moments
when people stepped in to help
without fully understanding
what was happening inside me emotionally,
something I reflected on
in They Didn’t Ask. They Just Did.

Back then,
stepping away felt very different.

Now…

it’s a choice.

A quiet intentional one.

Not because I don’t understand—

but because I do.

Because I can feel
when my peace is being disrupted.

Protecting that peace
has become something
I hold close.

Life no longer feels rushed
the way it once did.

There’s more need now
to take things in slowly…

to look at situations
from different sides
before deciding
what belongs in my life.

I’ve come to appreciate that space.

Sitting with things.

Learning from them.

Understanding what truly matters.

Everything feels calmer there.

Patience has always lived somewhere inside me.

Something that feels like
it was placed there
long ago.

At times,
that patience has been difficult.

More often though…

it has given me something
I rarely allowed myself before.

Room to breathe.

Understanding when things don’t unfold
the way I hoped.

Acceptance when progress moves slower
than I want it to.

That alone
has changed more than I expected.

Over time,
I also began noticing
how much healing changed
the way I speak to myself

with more patience,
more understanding,
and far less pressure
to be everything at once.

I reflected more on that
in The Way I Talk to Myself Now.

Then there’s another kind of strength.

A quieter one.

The kind that doesn’t need attention
in order to exist.

No need to prove anything.

No need to explain it.

It’s simply there.

Steady.

Quietly carried
through everything.

These are the things
I carry with me now

the awareness…

the patience…

the quiet strength…

all shaping
the way I move through the world.

Healing has also meant rediscovering
parts of myself I thought had faded.

I reflected more on that
in What I Am Beginning to Feel Again.
